Newly released Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest shows steady improvement in overall satisfaction at chain pharmacies for 5 years running.
New Hope, Pennsylvania, August 28, 2006
The newly released 2006 Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest" shows that over half of consumers fill prescriptions in chain pharmacies, and more than one out of three use a chain pharmacy most often. In recent years, however, chains have lost share to mail/online and mass merchant pharmacies. The most commonly used pharmacy chains in the U.S. include Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Brooks/Eckerd, and OSCO pharmacy. Now in its seventh year, the WilsonRx® survey shows that overall pharmacy satisfaction has increased at chain pharmacies for five consecutive years. Strengths include convenient store hours and drive-through windows. Opportunities exist for further improvement. More results are available in the newly published 2006 Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest". Similar to other store type pharmacy customers, the three most important issues to chain customers are that prescriptions are filled accurately, the pharmacy accepts insurance with no problem, and getting the brand, dose and amount of drug they expected. Of all pharmacy customers, chain customers place the most importance on convenience. Chains have been meeting their customers? high expectations for convenience and earn high marks in areas such as convenient store hours and drive-through windows.
Weaknesses for chain pharmacies include professional services, such as having prescriptions in stock when needed and pharmacist counseling. Moreover, only 12% of chain customers say that they are on a first name basis with their pharmacist. "One area where chains can improve their satisfaction scores is to offer patient education and counseling, yet few take advantage of the opportunity. Our research has shown that a sincere offer to counsel can be highly effective in increasing overall satisfaction and loyalty. Currently consumers may be missing the chance to develop a relationship with their pharmacist and learn more about their medications and their proper use", said third generation pharmacist Jim Wilson, President of Wilson Health Information.
Chain pharmacy customers are an important consumer group. They visit their pharmacy nearly four times per month, or about one additional time compared to other customers. On average, chain customers report spending $81 per month on prescriptions at their pharmacy, $22 on food products, $21 on OTC/non-prescription medications, and $17 on personal care/beauty products.
Individual chain research results are available exclusively by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in the Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest and Digest Strategizer Software. In recent years chains have lost share to mail/online and mass merchant pharmacies. Customer age analyses finds that Chain pharmacies are most commonly used among respondents in all age groups. However, the survey revealed as pharmacy customers age, they are much less likely to use chains and considerably more likely to use mail/online and clinic pharmacies. Respondents over age 65 are almost twice as likely to use mail/online pharmacies, compared to those under age 50. Young pharmacy customers are slightly more likely to use mass merchant and food store pharmacies.

Wilson Health Information & Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. releases new consumer pharmacy satisfaction survey finds overall pharmacy satisfaction increasing for the 5th consecutive year.
New Hope, Pennsylvania, August 27, 2006
The newly released Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest" shows that chains continue to be the most commonly used type of pharmacy, followed by mail, independent, food store, mass merchant, and clinic pharmacies. The most commonly used pharmacies in the U.S. include Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart, Medco, Caremark, Kroger, and Rite Aid. Among those who use mail, 70% probably or definitely would use their local pharmacy if the amount and price were identical and nearly half (48%) of household consumers report that they use more than one pharmacy to fill prescriptions.
While the majority of pharmacy customers trust their pharmacist as a source of information on medications, fewer than one out of four pharmacy customers indicate that they spoke to their pharmacist when they last filled a medication. "Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to provide patient education and counseling, yet few take advantage of the opportunity. The downside is that consumers may be missing the chance to develop a relationship with their pharmacist and learn more about their medications and their proper use", said third generation pharmacist Jim Wilson, President of Wilson Health Information "Customers are more satisfied and more loyal with their pharmacy and more likely to take their medications as prescribed if they speak to their pharmacist."
Now in its seventh year, the WilsonRx® Survey, includes data for more than 300 topics, and over 32,000 respondents across the 48 continental states and the top 23 U.S. metropolitan markets in February of 2006. The Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest" provides healthcare executives with competitive intelligence and information about levels of satisfaction and importance ratings for over 50 pharmacy related issues as well as perceptions of care for 56 medical conditions such as Arthritis, COPD, Diabetes, Hypertension and Pain.
Top line results of the WilsonRx® Survey will be presented on Sunday, August 27th at the 2006 National Association of Chain Drug Stores Pharmacy and Technology Conference in San Diego, CA at 9:45 am.
Results from the survey are published annually by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in the "Pharmacy Satisfaction Digest". The 2006 edition of the Digest is available at the Boehringer Ingelheim booth #518 here at NACDS. In addition, a demonstration of the newly available Digest Strategizer will be available.
